Ukraine's Soccer Team Qualifies for Euro 2024, Bringing Pride and Distraction Amid War
Ukrainians are proud and grateful for their men's soccer team qualifying for the European Championship, providing a welcome distraction from the ongoing war with Russia.
Celebrations were muted due to Russian missile attacks, but the team's success gives Ukrainians something to cheer for during the tournament in Germany.
President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the team's determination and resilience, stating that Ukrainians always win when they face difficulties and continue to fight.
Ukraine's Mykhailo Mudryk scored the winning goal in a 2-1 comeback victory against Iceland in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, held outside Ukraine due to the ongoing war.
Inspired youth players at the Sporting Kyiv football academy expressed pride and motivation, with 12-year-old Hlib Kochetov stating, "It shows that war does not stop us from pursuing sports and qualifying for the European Championship." Fifteen-year-old Artem Mykhailenko added, "Seeing Ukraine compete at Euro 2024 will be a moment of pride for the entire nation, and we need to show our worth and unity as a country." Ukrainians are trying to carry on with their normal lives in the face of Russian missile strikes and drone attacks.
This includes keeping children active in sports and other activities to help them cope with the trauma of the war.
Anatolii Kartashov, a coach at Sporting Kyiv, emphasized the importance of giving children goals and dreams, such as becoming professional footballers.
Ukraine is set to compete in the Euro 2024 tournament, with their first match against Romania on June 17 in Munich.
