Ramadan Celebrations Revitalize Historic Jeddah

Festivities in Al-Balad highlight traditional crafts, local cuisine, and community engagement during the holy month.
In the holy month of Ramadan, Jeddah's historic Al-Balad district has transformed into a vibrant hub of cultural activity, showcasing the area's rich heritage and culinary offerings.

The city's festival, which runs throughout Ramadan, emphasizes the historical importance of Al-Balad, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The festival features a variety of workshops, including Arabic calligraphy and pottery, which reflect the artistic traditions of the Hijaz region.

Children are offered interactive entertainment aimed at introducing them to the cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia.

Visitors have shared their impressions of Al-Balad during this festive time.

Salem Al-Harthi, a local resident, described the district as an "unparalleled destination," citing the combination of historic charm and festive energy during Ramadan.

Hamad Al-Shemmari, a visitor from Hail, expressed his delight at the area’s narrow alleys and vibrant streets, stating that the ambiance enhances the experience of the holy month.

Mahmoud Al-Nori, a first-time visitor from Syria, emphasized the architectural beauty of Jeddah, noting that experiencing the city during Ramadan provides a unique perspective that surpasses what he had heard.

The festival's street food scene is among its most popular attractions.

After evening prayers, numerous vendors in traditional attire set up stalls, offering local delicacies amid the sounds of folk music.

Young entrepreneur Muath Al-Bukiri shared his initiative to serve traditional dishes like balila (boiled chickpeas) and chopped liver, reflecting the popularity of such offerings among attendees of all ages.

Families frequent Al-Balad to partake in Ramadan celebrations within an authentic setting.

Abdulaziz Al-Ahmadi, a local resident, enjoys narrating historical stories to his family as they stroll through the old streets, appreciating their connection to the past.

A notable gathering spot is Al-Hazazi Yard, where a multitude of food stalls foster a lively environment.

Mohammed bin Zagir remarked on the tradition his family has developed in visiting Al-Balad to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and local flavors, further enhancing their Ramadan experience.

The Ramadan festival in historic Jeddah plays a significant role in bolstering local entrepreneurs and artisans.

Heritage markets provide a platform for small and medium businesses to exhibit their crafts and culinary specialties.

The initiative, overseen by the Historic Jeddah District Program and the Ministry of Culture, has reportedly attracted over a million visitors during its opening week.
