Princess of Wales' Italy visit highlights progressive preschool approach

The Reggio Approach emphasizes child-centered education and fosters creativity in early childhood development.
Reggio Emilia, Italy: The Princess of Wales' recent visit to Italy has drawn attention to the Italian early childhood educational model known as the Reggio Approach.

This progressive method focuses on fostering a child's inherent curiosity and potential by valuing their experiences and encouraging active learning.

The Reggio Approach, utilized in public daycare centers and preschools in Reggio Emilia, emphasizes the role of teachers as facilitators rather than instructors.

Parents and the community also play an essential part in supporting children's development.

Princess Catherine, who has made early childhood development a key focus of her work, spent two days experiencing this educational model firsthand.

Reggio partially originated from the Montessori philosophy and serves as a counterpoint to standardized educational models prevalent in countries like the US and Britain, which emphasize testing and rote learning for young children.

Italian parents who themselves received education based on rote learning often find appeal in Reggio's approach, particularly when their children reach ages 3 or 4.

However, they may become concerned around age 5 as they think about their child entering Grade 1.

The Reggio Approach was developed post-World War II by mothers in Reggio Emilia who sold a German tank for funds and reconstructed a place to care for children while the community rebuilt.

Loris Malaguzzi, an innovative pedagogical expert, helped articulate the model's focus on child-centered learning.

This approach valued children's competencies and communication methods, which were not widely recognized at the time.

The Reggio Approach spread throughout Italy, particularly in the north's left-leaning municipalities.

However, its widespread adoption was hindered by Italy's conservative central government until the 1990s due to associations with Reggio Emilia's communist history.

Today, despite the removal of this red scare, the model's adoption often depends on local administrations' investment in training and teachers' independent efforts.

Reggio employs features common in high-quality programs, such as promoting social and emotional well-being through adults and children's relationships.

Research conducted by Sylvi Kuperman found that Reggio-inspired programs in Italy yielded greater high school graduation and employment outcomes compared to those who did not receive formal childcare.

These programs typically involve multiple years with the same teacher, meal preparation activities, and an emphasis on natural materials and environments.

During her visit, Princess Catherine spent time at the "Salvatore Allende" daycare and preschool in Reggio Emilia, engaging with children in the garden and learning about their daily experiences.

Her interest in this approach highlights its potential impact on early childhood development in Britain, where similar programs are not recognized in national educational policy.

A Reggio-inspired center called Wild Joy, founded by educator Kathryn Ramsay, demonstrates the model's principles through a focus on outdoor play and exploration.

The center emphasizes the importance of children learning to concentrate through self-directed activities rather than following structured instructions.
