Saudi Arabia's Strategic Advances in Water Sustainability

The Kingdom's comprehensive initiatives focus on tackling water scarcity through modern technology and infrastructure improvements.
Saudi Arabia is addressing the critical issue of water scarcity through its ambitious National Water Strategy and Vision 2030. These initiatives are designed to ensure sustainable water availability in the Kingdom by investing in desalination, wastewater reuse, and advanced water management technologies.

The National Water Company (NWC) is at the forefront of supporting these efforts, accelerating various projects, enhancing water infrastructure, and implementing digital management systems aimed at achieving sustainability.

As part of its comprehensive approach, the NWC is overseeing 253 projects that focus on reinforcing water distribution networks, improving wastewater treatment facilities, and enhancing service delivery to meet long-term water reliance needs, according to Hany Labib, chief operating officer of Dorsch Middle East.

Labib highlighted the importance of public awareness campaigns, which stress the significance of conservation in light of growing climate pressures and increasing population.

These initiatives aim to optimize resource use by minimizing water losses and maximizing the reuse of wastewater.

Such efforts are not only addressing immediate consumption needs but also ensuring continued resource sustainability for future generations.

In alignment with its sustainability goals, the Kingdom is embracing advanced technologies to improve operational efficiency in the water sector.

Labib emphasized Saudi Arabia’s leadership in smart water management solutions, which encompass a growing number of water and wastewater projects.

Innovative technologies such as real-time digital monitoring systems are being integrated to optimize resource use, track consumption patterns, detect leaks, and enhance network efficiencies.

The use of low-energy desalination and next-generation filtration technologies is also being promoted to sustain water production over the long term.

Furthermore, advancements in artificial intelligence will assist in analyzing data generated from smart water systems, thereby improving decision-making in water resource management.

Saudi Arabia's strategy for water sustainability is characterized by an integrated approach that incorporates the conservation of groundwater, advancements in desalination technologies, and the reuse of wastewater.

Investments in smart metering and AI-driven leak detection have been established to promote efficiency.

The recent formation of the Saudi Water Authority aims to strengthen policy frameworks and governance, further optimizing water use.

The NWC reported treating approximately 2.1 billion cubic meters of wastewater in 2024, underscoring the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing water security and sustainability.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia is actively involved in global water sustainability initiatives, hosting events such as the Saudi Water Forum and the One Water Summit, which focus on integrated policies and the promotion of sustainable development goals related to water.

Public-private partnerships (PPPs) play a crucial role in advancing water infrastructure under Vision 2030. The Saudi Water Partnership Company has secured investments exceeding SR45 billion ($12 billion) from the private sector, fostering innovation in water production and treatment.

These collaborations are instrumental in introducing new, energy-efficient technologies and ensuring the delivery of high-quality water services.

As climate-related risks such as prolonged droughts and fluctuating rainfall patterns become increasingly prevalent, Saudi Arabia is preparing to address these challenges.

The Kingdom's significant investments in desalination—comprising 33 plants and 139 purification facilities—have led to daily production levels of 11.5 million cubic meters of water.

Labib noted that sustainable urban planning initiatives, such as the Green Riyadh program, introduce efficient irrigation practices and landscaping to further bolster water conservation efforts.

Through a combination of strong governance frameworks, public-private partnerships, and innovative technologies, Saudi Arabia is establishing a resilient water management system that aims to secure water access for future generations.
