Turkish Court Postpones Hearing Over Hotel Fire That Killed 78
Court Adjourns Trial of 32 Defendants, Including Hotel Owner and Officials, Over January Fire at Luxury Ski Resort Hotel in Kartalkaya.
A Turkish court has adjourned the trial of 32 individuals over a fire that occurred at a luxury ski resort hotel in Kartalkaya on January 21.
The blaze resulted in the tragic loss of 78 lives and injured 130 others.
Testimonies from survivors, many visibly distraught, have been shared over the past 10 days during the trial, which commenced on July 7th.
The court is investigating allegations that inadequate safety measures at the Grand Kartal Hotel contributed to the disaster.
Those charged with manslaughter include the hotel owner and managers, as well as local authorities such as the deputy mayor of Bolu city and two fire department officials.
Yusuf Yaman, a witness whose daughter and granddaughter perished in the fire, expressed his grief, stating that the suspects' initial denials of responsibility have compounded their guilt.
Following the fire, conflicting claims of accountability were made by the local municipality and the tourism ministry, each blaming the other.
The hotel's director, Emir Aras, expressed regret during the trial but chose to remain in detention.
The court has postponed the hearing until September 22nd.
