Saudia to operate flying taxis to ferry pilgrims between Jeddah and Makkah
Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) announced plans to launch electric flying taxi services to transport Hajj pilgrims from Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport to various hotels in Makkah.
Saudia is set to acquire roughly 100 eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) Lilium jets, which are electric-powered and eco-friendly, for this purpose.
Abdullah Al-Shahrani, the Saudia Group's spokesperson, explained that these aircraft will be used during Hajj and Umrah to offer pilgrims a quick and sustainable travel option, covering distances of up to 250 km. The jets can carry 4 to 6 passengers and will facilitate connections between travel destinations and main airports.
Furthermore, Al-Shahrani mentioned that Saudia is coordinating to get the necessary regulatory approvals for the jets, which boast a spacious and adaptable cabin for a premium travel experience.
The introduction of these flying taxis aligns with Saudi Arabia's efforts to modernize air transport and promote sustainable tourism.
