Saudi Arabia Celebrates First Saudi Green Initiative Day: SR705 Billion Invested in Sustainable Projects, Restoring Habitats, and Protecting Endangered Species
Saudi Arabia held its first Saudi Green Initiative Day on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of creating a sustainable future for future generations.
The event marks the Kingdom's commitment to transitioning to a greener future and celebrates the launch of the SGI by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on March 27, 2021.
Over 80 public and private sector projects, totaling over SR705 billion ($188 billion) in investment, are part of the SGI and aim to improve quality of life and stimulate economic growth in emerging sectors, aligning with Vision 2030 objectives.
The SGI (Saudi Green Initiative) has significantly contributed to restoring natural habitats, preserving biodiversity, and safeguarding livelihoods in Saudi Arabia.
Through renewable energy projects, 2.8 gigawatts of capacity have been connected to the national grid, powering over 520,000 homes.
Since 2021, over 49 million trees and shrubs have been planted, and extensive land rehabilitation efforts have been undertaken.
The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing has led several tree-planting projects, including in Riyadh, Yanbu Governorate, and Al-Ahsa Governorate.
Saudi Arabia is working to protect 30% of its land and marine areas by 2030 as part of an environmental conservation effort.
Thousands of trees have been planted in various sites including Dar Al-Jewar, Bouvardia City, and Diyar Al-Hasa.
The country has already protected 18.1% of its land and 6.49% of its marine environments.
Over 1,660 endangered animals have been reintroduced to their natural habitats through conservation efforts.
