Saudi Arabia Inaugurates Carbon Capture Facility in Rabigh
Saudi Arabia has inaugurated a new carbon capture and utilization facility in Rabigh to combat climate change. This joint venture, involving Petro Rabigh and Dubai's Gulf Cryo, marks the first such project for the western part of Saudi Arabia catering to the commercial sector and is the second in the nation. Established by a partnership formed in March 2022, the installation at the Petro Rabigh complex will capture 300 tons of CO2 daily from its monoethylene glycol production, aiming to cut its emissions by up to 85% or 100,000 tons yearly, thus supporting Saudi Arabia's net-zero goal by 2060.
The captured CO2 will be purified to food-grade quality and reused in various industries, showcasing the project's broad environmental and economic benefits. Petro Rabigh will use a portion of the CO2, while Gulf Cryo will distribute the rest for applications in sectors like desalination, food preservation, agriculture, beverage production, and concrete manufacturing, thereby contributing to supply chain decarbonization.
