CEO of NEOM Green Hydrogen Co.: Saudi Arabia's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant to Operate by 2026, Reducing 5 Million Tonnes of CO2 Emissions Annually

Wesam Al-Ghamdi, CEO of NEOM Green Hydrogen Co., emphasized the importance of clean hydrogen in combating climate change and achieving sustainable decarbonization.
Once burned, hydrogen produces only water, making it carbon-free in its end use.

The International Energy Agency highlighted the role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing sectors like long-haul transport, chemicals, and iron and steel in their 2023 annual report.

NEOM's hydrogen plant, operational by 2026, will produce 600 tonnes of clean hydrogen daily and export it as green ammonia.

Al-Ghamdi believes that clean hydrogen is crucial for the energy transition, particularly in industries like steelmaking and mining, where it could be the only viable solution for substantial decarbonization.

Saudi Arabia's official, Al-Ghamdi, announced that the progress of the NGHC plant is on track and the Kingdom aims to become the world's leading hydrogen producer and exporter, producing four million tons per year by 2030.

The NGHC plant will make Saudi Arabia a front-runner in the green hydrogen industry, with plans to achieve large-scale, low-cost production from 2026.

Saudi Arabia's renewable expertise and abundant natural resources, including wind, sun, and land, position the Kingdom to lead the world in green hydrogen production.

The CEO of NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), Wesam Al-Ghamdi, expressed pride in NGHC's role in Saudi Arabia's environmental and economic transformation through developing and exporting renewable and eco-friendly energy.

This is crucial for Saudi Arabia as it diversifies its economy beyond oil, in line with Vision 2030.

NGHC's green hydrogen project, set to be operational in 2026, will annually reduce 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Green hydrogen is essential for the future energy mix, helping decarbonize sectors that are difficult to reduce emissions from.

NGHC, a Saudi company focused on clean hydrogen production, is expanding its team in preparation for operational phase within the next two years.

They are recruiting locally and globally, aiming to create 300 direct jobs and many more indirectly.

NGHC values investing in its workforce to drive the hydrogen industry forward and meet future demands for green hydrogen and ammonia production.

NGHC, a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, is committed not only to job creation but also to developing a skilled workforce through education, training, and upskilling programs.

They are collaborating with local communities and education institutions in Saudi Arabia to encourage young people to enter the emerging green hydrogen industry.

The construction of the green hydrogen plant is on track, with the first six wind turbines delivered in October.

More shipments of wind turbines and major equipment for the hydrogen facility, wind garden, and solar farm are anticipated this year.

NGHC has achieved financial closure for its green hydrogen plant, setting it apart from similar projects globally.

The CEO of the Neom Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) announced that the company has secured $8.4 billion in investments, making it the only green hydrogen project with full production in sight.

The financial close in May 2023 was a significant milestone, demonstrating the project's robustness and allowing for accelerated construction.

NGHC's offtake agreement with Air Products guarantees the export of 100 percent of the green hydrogen for 30 years.

The CEO emphasized that the green hydrogen industry is still young but has great potential for future growth.

NGHC aims to unlock the potential of other projects by proving the business case for green hydrogen at scale and providing a blueprint for the industry's expansion.

In October 2023, Wesam Al-Ghamdi took over as CEO of NEOM Green Hydrogen Co. (NGHC) from David Edmondson.

Al-Ghamdi previously worked at Ma’aden as the vice president of strategy and business development.

The next two years at NGHC will focus on completing the construction of a giga-scale green hydrogen facility.

Al-Ghamdi, with a 25-year career in engineering, operations, and project management at companies like Saudi Basic Industries Corp. and Shell, will lead the project to completion.
