Saudi Arabia Advances Carbon Credit Initiatives Through Workshop
National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification emphasizes nature-based solutions for climate change.
On February 9, 2025, the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) convened a workshop entitled "Carbon Credit for Nature-Based Solutions" in Riyadh, aimed at fostering collaboration and sharing expertise to advance the carbon market in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
As reported by the Saudi Press Agency, the initiative underscores the use of natural solutions as essential tools in addressing climate change challenges.
The workshop focused on the significance of carbon markets in Saudi Arabia for facilitating the transition to a more sustainable economy.
Key discussions included the role of natural solutions in achieving the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative and the regional Middle East Green Initiative.
Participants examined the multiple advantages offered by carbon markets in supporting these initiatives.
Khaled Al-Abdulkader, the CEO of NCVC, stated that the nature-based carbon credit program serves as a vital funding source for the national afforestation program, aligning with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative.
This initiative aims to cut carbon emissions by 278 million tons annually.
Al-Abdulkader further noted the NCVC's commitment to bolstering natural solutions through strategic partnerships.
These collaborations are designed to enhance capacity and knowledge in areas related to carbon storage and monitoring.
Current agreements include partnerships with the International Carbon Registry, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, and the UN Development Program.
Additionally, he shared insights regarding the center's ambition to plant approximately 135 million trees and rehabilitate 289,000 hectares of degraded land across the Kingdom.
