Automated Umbrellas Enhance Comfort at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah
250 automated umbrellas installed to provide shade and cooling for worshippers at one of Islam’s holiest sites.
In a notable enhancement to visitor comfort, 250 automated umbrellas have been installed in the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.
These large structures are designed to offer relief from the intense heat experienced in the region, particularly during peak visiting times.
The umbrellas operate automatically, allowing for a more comfortable environment for prayer and worship.
Collectively, the umbrellas cover over 228,000 worshippers in the outdoor prayer areas of the mosque.
Each unit consists of two overlapping sections that align seamlessly when closed.
The specifications of the umbrellas are substantial, measuring 25.5 meters by 25.5 meters and standing at a height of 22 meters.
Their design is intended to withstand the harsh climate conditions of Madinah while harmonizing with the architectural style of the mosque.
Constructed with glass-reinforced carbon fiber arms, the umbrellas feature intricate mosaic patterns, which highlight the artistry involved in their design.
Despite their seemingly delicate construction, each umbrella weighs approximately 40 tons.
Furthermore, they are equipped with 436 misting fans, strategically placed to facilitate air cooling, and over 1,000 built-in lighting units that ensure adequacy of light during nighttime.
With each umbrella offering a shaded space for more than 900 worshippers, this initiative significantly expands the available shaded prayer areas.
The installation of the automated umbrellas is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the overall experience for visitors and worshippers at this historic and sacred site, ensuring comfort during various times of the year.
