Exhibition of the Holy Kaaba’s Kiswah at Islamic Arts Biennale 2025
The Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the Kiswah, marking its first public display outside Makkah.
The Islamic Arts Biennale 2025, currently taking place at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport, has introduced a significant exhibition of the Kiswah, the cloth that covers the Holy Kaaba in Makkah.
This event, which runs until May 25, represents the first time the entire Kiswah has been displayed publicly outside of Makkah.
The Kiswah has been meticulously crafted from silk and adorned with gold and silver thread, featuring intricate weaving and embroidery.
The Diriyah Biennale Foundation, which is hosting the event, emphasized the cultural importance of the Kiswah, describing it as “the highest form of creative production in Islamic arts” and highlighting its spiritual significance for Muslims globally.
The King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswa has been responsible for producing the Kiswah since 1927, replacing it annually in a ceremony that reflects the Kingdom’s dedication to serving the Islamic community.
The exhibition at the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 not only showcases the Kiswah but also features a variety of historical Islamic artifacts and contemporary artworks, aiming to enhance appreciation for Islamic craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
The biennale has been established as a platform to promote greater understanding of Islamic cultural legacy through art, and the displaying of the Kiswah is intended to underline Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in supporting Islam and Muslim communities around the world.
