Makkah's Grand Mosque Expands Once Again: Saudi Portico Named in Honor of King Salman's Initiatives
The Grand Mosque in Makkah has a history of porticoes that dates back to the time of Uthman bin Affan, the third caliph.
The Ottoman portico was expanded during the Abbasid caliphate and later during the reigns of King Saud, King Faisal, and King Khalid.
The largest expansion of the Grand Mosque occurred during King Abdullah's reign, which included the construction of large courtyards and the expansion of the courtyard around the Kaaba.
King Salman has launched five initiatives as part of a plan for the third Saudi expansion of the Grand Mosque, which includes the expansion of the main building and courtyards, a pedestrian tunnel project, and a central service station project.
As a result, the Ottoman portico will be renamed the Saudi portico.
The Saudi portico provides a wider space for worshipers with high-quality engineering standards and a faith-based environment for visitors to the mosque.
