Israel Army Probes Soldier Seen Desecrating Virgin Mary Statue in Lebanon
The Israeli military announced an investigation after a photo emerged of a soldier apparently placing a cigarette into the mouth of a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon.
JERUSALEM — The Israeli military has expressed its intent to investigate a recent incident involving one of its soldiers.
A photograph circulating on social media platforms depicts the soldier purportedly engaging in an act of desecration towards a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon, placing what appears to be a cigarette into her mouth.
According to Israeli military representatives, they 'view the incident with utmost severity,' reiterating that such conduct is not aligned with the values expected from their personnel.
The statement assures that an investigation has been initiated, promising swift action based on the findings of the probe.
Preliminary assessments suggest the photograph captures an event that transpired several weeks ago.
This latest controversy adds to ongoing scrutiny faced by the Israeli military regarding its soldiers' conduct towards Christian statues in southern Lebanon.
In late April, two soldiers were penalized with 30 days of military detention and removal from combat duties following the destruction of a Jesus Christ statue in Debl village.
The incident involved a photograph that emerged online, showing an Israeli soldier using a sledgehammer to damage a statue which had fallen off its cross.
The Israeli military has underscored its commitment to respecting 'freedom of religion and worship, as well as holy sites and religious symbols of all religions and communities.' It emphasized it does not intend to harm civilian infrastructure, including religious buildings or symbols.
Despite these assertions, the latest incident highlights an ongoing challenge in maintaining appropriate conduct and respect for cultural and religious heritage during military operations.
