Turkiye Considers Role in Strait of Hormuz Demining Following Iran-US Peace Deal
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan indicates potential involvement in mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz after a possible peace agreement between Iran and the United States.
ANKARA: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has suggested that Turkiye could consider participating in demining efforts in the Strait of Hormuz following a potential peace agreement between Iran and the United States.
In remarks made to reporters in London on Friday evening, Fidan stated that a technical team would likely undertake mine-clearing work in the strait after such an agreement is reached.
According to Fidan, Turkiye views these efforts positively as a humanitarian duty.
Fidan provided further details regarding the possible involvement of Turkiye in this initiative: any demining work would be conducted by a multilateral technical team formed in the aftermath of an Iran-US peace accord.
He confirmed that Turkiye would have 'no problem' with joining mine-clearing operations under such conditions.
However, Fidan cautioned that Turkiye's position would be reassessed if the technical coalition of countries were to become involved in renewed conflict.
In addition, Fidan expressed optimism regarding the resolution of issues related to Iran's nuclear program during the next round of talks, which are set to take place in Pakistan.
