Iran Executes Man for Alleged Mission with Israel's Mossad
Erfan Kiani hanged after being convicted of carrying out a 'mission' during protests in January.
Tehran, Iran: Iran has executed Erfan Kiani for his alleged involvement in a mission on behalf of Israel's spy agency, Mossad, during mass protests in January.
The judiciary reported that Kiani was hanged after his sentence was upheld by the country’s Supreme Court.
Mizan Online, a website affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, described Kiani as one of the main operatives involved in a mission assigned by Mossad during unrest in Isfahan province.
Kiani's execution comes amid a series of executions since Iran's war broke out with Israel and the United States.
The judiciary accused him of various offenses, including destruction of public and private property, arson, possession and use of Molotov cocktails, carrying a bladed weapon, blocking vehicle routes, attacking officers, and causing fear and panic among citizens.
His case follows the hanging of another man in Iran on Thursday for membership in a banned opposition group.
In recent weeks, Iranian authorities have escalated executions during the ongoing conflict with Israel and the United States that began on February 28.
According to authorities, January’s protests were instigated by Israel, the US, and opposition groups, including the banned People’s Mujahedin.
Since March 19, Iranian authorities have executed nine men on charges linked to the protests.
Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have reported that Iran is among the world's leading users of the death penalty, second only to China.
