Saudi Artist Abeer Sultan Reflects on Life and Bereavement in Art
Abeer Sultan, a Saudi artist, conveys the essence of existence and bereavement through her art.
She relentlessly captures everyday life scenes, storing them until they inspire her artwork. Her latest piece, "I Will Take the Sun Into My Eyes," is exhibited at Noor Riyadh in JAX District until March 2.
Sultan appreciates participating in Noor Riyadh with other remarkable artists, intending to immerse her audience in the world she envisions.
Known for invoking emotional reactions, her latest work offers a fresh perspective on "Refracted Identities, Shared Futures," melding reality with imagination influenced by the color blue.
Commissioned by Noor Riyadh, her three-screen video art illustrates diverse scenes from Riyadh and Jeddah, chosen for the emotions they evoke.
In Jeddah, Sultan pursued the concept of sea and nostalgia, a recurrent theme in her thoughts. Bjork's song "Sun In My Mouth" inspired the work's title and a reflective poem serving as its basis, connecting to her previous project, "Al-Bidaya," which focused on funeral symbolism.
Sultan's art captures the dichotomy between growth and decay, using blue hues to symbolize both sorrow and serenity. Her work showcases familial scenes of prayer, evoking memories and reverence for Muslim viewers.
Sultan, collaborating with artist Sumayah Fallatah, ends with an image of a woman walking to the sea, hinting at expanding her series on the "Children of the Sea."
Striving to provoke reflection, Sultan's work is rooted in contemporary concerns, layered with human complexity. She hopes her art allows others to connect with her emotions and see their own stories reflected.
