French President Emmanuel Macron will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris on Tuesday to discuss the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
Paris, France – French President Emmanuel Macron is set to host a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris on Tuesday.
The primary focus of their discussion will be on the 'full implementation' of the current Gaza ceasefire agreement, as stated by the Elysée Palace.
This meeting takes place approximately one month after the fragile truce between Hamas and Israel was established following two years of conflict that began with Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
Abbas, aged 89, has been the long-standing head of the Palestinian Authority (PA), which currently exercises limited control over parts of the West Bank.
There are ongoing discussions about the PA possibly taking charge in governing Gaza under the ceasefire agreement.
The French presidency has indicated that the meeting will cover the subsequent steps in the peace plan, with a particular emphasis on security, governance, and reconstruction efforts.
The ceasefire brokered by former US President
Donald Trump on October 10 has faced challenges due to ongoing Israeli strikes and alleged Palestinian attacks against Israeli soldiers.
Trump had recently stated his expectation for an International Stabilization Force to be deployed in Gaza 'very soon' to monitor the ceasefire.
Macron's recognition of a Palestinian state at a United Nations summit in September is anticipated to be a point of discussion during Abbas’ visit.
This move was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority as 'historic and courageous.' Discussions will likely include ensuring continued humanitarian aid access for Gaza and addressing changes within the Palestinian Authority, which is deemed essential for achieving a 'democratic and sovereign Palestinian state living in peace and security alongside Israel,' according to the Elysée.
The October 2023 attack by Hamas resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people on the Israeli side, predominantly civilians, as per an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
In response, the Israeli military's campaign has led to the killing of over 69,000 Palestinians, with a majority being civilians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
The UN considers these figures reliable and notes that they do not distinguish between fighters and civilians.
The meeting between Macron and Abbas reflects ongoing international efforts to stabilize the region amidst ongoing conflict.
