US Embassy in Riyadh Issues Security Alert Urging Americans to Shelter in Place Amid Regional Attacks

Updated advisory warns of heightened missile and drone threats in Saudi Arabia following strike on the American diplomatic compound
The United States Embassy in Riyadh has issued an updated security alert urging American citizens across Saudi Arabia to shelter in place as tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate following attacks linked to the widening conflict involving Iran.

The advisory, released on March 8, warned Americans in the cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran to remain indoors and limit movement as security officials monitor potential threats.

The embassy also advised people to avoid visiting U.S. diplomatic facilities until further notice and to follow local authorities’ instructions.

The alert follows a recent drone strike that targeted the U.S. Embassy compound in Riyadh, causing a limited fire and structural damage to part of the building.

Saudi authorities reported that two drones were involved in the attack, which occurred during a series of retaliatory strikes across the region after the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iranian targets.

Embassy officials said the situation remains volatile and warned that additional missile or unmanned aerial vehicle attacks could occur with little warning.

American citizens were advised to seek shelter on the lowest floor of buildings, stay away from windows and remain alert to official security announcements.

The U.S. mission has also restricted non-essential travel to nearby military installations and urged Americans in Saudi Arabia to maintain personal safety plans in case conditions deteriorate further.

Washington has simultaneously issued broader travel warnings covering multiple Middle Eastern countries, reflecting concerns that retaliatory attacks linked to the conflict could affect diplomatic facilities, military sites and energy infrastructure across the region.

Saudi air-defence systems have intercepted several missiles and drones in recent days as the kingdom and other Gulf states respond to attacks aimed at strategic targets, including military bases and oil facilities.

The strike on the U.S. embassy compound was among the most visible incidents affecting American interests in the country.

Despite the attack, U.S. officials confirmed that embassy personnel remain in contact with Saudi authorities and are continuing essential diplomatic operations while monitoring the evolving security environment.

Authorities have urged Americans in the kingdom to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so they can receive real-time alerts and be contacted quickly in an emergency as the regional situation continues to develop.
