U.S. Embassy in Riyadh Issues Emergency Security Alert After Drone Strike and Escalating Regional Threats

American mission in Saudi Arabia urges citizens to shelter in place and avoid key diplomatic sites as conflict across the Middle East intensifies.
The United States Embassy in Riyadh issued an urgent security alert for American citizens in Saudi Arabia in early March after the diplomatic compound was struck by drones amid a rapidly escalating regional conflict.

The alert, dated early March, instructed U.S. nationals in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran to immediately shelter in place and avoid the embassy and nearby facilities until further notice.

Embassy officials also advised Americans to limit travel and refrain from visiting military installations across the kingdom while security conditions remain volatile.

The warning followed a drone attack that struck the embassy compound in the Saudi capital, causing a limited fire and minor structural damage to the building.

Saudi authorities confirmed that the incident involved two drones and said air defence systems intercepted several additional unmanned aircraft during the broader assault.

No injuries were reported among embassy personnel, and diplomatic staff took shelter inside the compound while emergency protocols were activated.

The embassy subsequently restricted operations and issued updated guidance to citizens in the region.

Officials said the security alert reflected heightened risks linked to the expanding confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Iranian forces have launched missile and drone attacks across several countries hosting American military assets or diplomatic missions, including sites in the Gulf.

Saudi Arabia’s government reported that its air defences had intercepted numerous projectiles targeting strategic facilities and urban areas in recent days, underscoring the kingdom’s role in defending regional stability while protecting residents and critical infrastructure.

As the situation deteriorated, Washington advised Americans across multiple Middle Eastern countries to review travel plans and consider leaving the region when it is safe to do so.

The State Department also encouraged citizens to maintain emergency safety plans and monitor official security updates.

The embassy alert forms part of a wider series of warnings issued by U.S. diplomatic missions across the Middle East, many of which have reduced operations or temporarily closed due to escalating threats and ongoing military activity.

With airspace disruptions, missile interceptions and drone attacks reported across several countries, diplomatic officials continue to monitor the security environment closely while urging civilians to remain vigilant and prepared for further developments.
