Saudi Arabia’s air defenses intercepted a large number of drones heading toward the strategically important Shaybah oil field in the country’s southeastern desert, authorities said, thwarting a potentially significant strike on one of the kingdom’s major energy assets.

The Saudi defense ministry reported that air defense systems successfully destroyed a wave of unmanned aerial vehicles directed toward the Shaybah facility, located deep in the Empty Quarter near the border with the United Arab Emirates.

The interception was part of a broader defensive operation that also included the destruction of additional drones and ballistic missiles aimed at other sites across the kingdom.

Officials said that more than twenty drones were intercepted during the incident, with the majority of them targeting the Shaybah oil field.

Additional aerial threats included drones intercepted east of Riyadh and ballistic missiles launched toward Prince Sultan Air Base southeast of the Saudi capital.

Saudi air defense units reported successfully neutralizing those threats before they could reach their intended targets.

The Shaybah oil field is one of Saudi Arabia’s largest and most remote energy facilities and plays a critical role in the kingdom’s oil production network.

Situated in the vast Rub’ al Khali desert, the field produces large volumes of crude oil and is operated by the state energy giant Saudi Aramco.

Its remote location has historically been considered a strategic buffer against attacks, making the attempted strike particularly notable.

Saudi authorities have not publicly confirmed the origin of the drones involved in the latest incident.

However, the attempted attacks come amid rapidly escalating tensions across the Middle East, where missile and drone strikes have increasingly targeted military installations, energy infrastructure and shipping routes.

The kingdom has repeatedly emphasized its readiness to defend vital infrastructure and maintain stability in global energy markets.

Saudi air defense systems have been placed on heightened alert as part of a broader regional security response to ongoing hostilities and aerial threats.

Recent days have seen multiple attempts to strike energy facilities and strategic infrastructure across the Gulf, highlighting the vulnerability of oil installations that are central to the global energy supply chain.
