Riyadh's Summer Gatherings: Indoors vs Outdoors

Riyadh's Summer Gatherings: Indoors vs Outdoors

Despite soaring temperatures, socializing in Riyadh adapts to indoor venues like malls and cafes, while some still prefer outdoor options.
RIYADH: With summer temperatures in the Saudi capital reaching over 40 C, one might expect a decrease in social gatherings.

However, Riyadh's residents have found innovative ways to socialize despite the heat, shifting towards indoor spaces such as malls, cafes, and play areas.

This trend reflects a broader adaptation to the city's climate, transforming how Saudis interact and entertain themselves throughout the year. The shift towards indoor socializing is evident in various aspects of life in Riyadh.

Many working mothers prefer to meet at designated play zones within shopping complexes while taking their children along.

Hanan Al-Harbi, a 30-year-old intellectual property specialist, leverages her productive summer months for personal development and work.

She opts for the comfort of indoor spaces like soft-play centers where she can also engage in activities with her daughter.Shopping malls have emerged as primary social hubs, offering a range of entertainment options and hosting events that cater to diverse interests.

For professionals such as Tahani Al-Mutairi, a healthcare worker, malls serve as ideal venues for meetings given the time constraints of modern life.

Malls' appeal is compounded by their ability to provide emotional and financial benefits beyond mere socializing. The rise in indoor social spaces can also be linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to increased social isolation prior to its resolution.

However, while some may argue that malls and cafes offer a more comfortable alternative to outdoor gatherings due to better amenities and design, others appreciate well-prepared outdoor options that accommodate the heat.

For instance, Sikka's strategic seating arrangements have made it an attractive choice for those who prefer to be outdoors but still desire comfort. In contrast, individuals like Noura Al-Huqbani, a 55-year-old who enjoys spring trips and camping, find colder seasons more suitable for outdoor activities such as park visits.

The heat remains a significant factor in determining social venues; despite the city's infrastructure developing to accommodate hot weather, some still gravitate towards cooler evening hours or prefer to stay indoors.Social gatherings in Riyadh during summer have evolved significantly, with indoor spaces becoming the norm.

This shift not only offers respite from the heat but also introduces new dimensions for connection and entertainment.

Whether through malls' diverse offerings, cafes fostering networking and creative collaborations, or play centers facilitating family bonding, Saudis are actively reshaping their social landscapes to suit the changing seasons.
