Gaza Crisis: Doctors Witness Severe Child Injuries and Deaths from Israeli Fire, Alleging Deliberate Targeting
Doctors in Gaza have reported treating a large number of children with severe injuries caused by Israeli sniper fire and bombing, according to The Guardian.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health states that over 32,000 deaths and injuries have resulted from Israel's assault on Gaza, with one-third being children.
Nine doctors, most of whom are foreign volunteers, have shared their experiences in Gaza's hospitals.
They noted that most children's injuries were caused by shrapnel or burns from Israeli bombing of residential areas, resulting in family losses.
Some fatalities and injuries were also due to collapsing buildings, with some victims still missing under the debris.
Doctors in Gaza have been treating both combatants and non-combatants, including children and elderly people, for gunshot wounds.
In January, Dr. Vanita Gupta from a New York hospital volunteered at Gaza's European Hospital and encountered three critically injured children.
The families reported that the children were shot while together on the street, with no other gunfire reported nearby.
One child had died from a head wound, and the other two, including a girl around 6 years old, were still alive but in critical condition.
Gupta expressed her helplessness in saving the children, as their distraught fathers pleaded with her to do so.
A doctor named Gupta described a third child with a head wound who was sent for a CT scan and was told by the neurosurgeon that there was no hope due to a bullet wound.
The age and exact details of the child were not provided.
Some physicians suspect deliberate targeting of Palestinians, including children, by Israeli forces based on the specific types and locations of their injuries.
Doctors are concerned about the number of children being grievously wounded or killed by precision shots, often caused by high-caliber bullets.
In February, a UN panel condemned the Israeli military for allegedly targeting Palestinian civilians, including children, who were not combatants and were seeking shelter.
The group expressed shock over reports of Palestinian women and children being deliberately targeted and extrajudicially killed by the Israeli army or affiliated forces, some of whom were holding white pieces of cloth when they were killed.
The Guardian reported that it was difficult to definitively determine the circumstances of the incidents based on military expert and forensic pathologist consultations and descriptions of gunshot wounds suffered by eight children.
However, the ammunition identified in some instances was consistent with that used by the Israeli military.
Eyewitness accounts and video recordings support allegations that Israeli soldiers have targeted civilians, including children, in scenarios unrelated to combat with Hamas or other armed factions.
The text describes instances where individuals flying white flags, signaling peace, were still shot at in certain situations.
Haaretz reports that Israel has a history of engaging civilians in areas declared "combat zones" by its military.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) use snipers or "sharpshooters" during combat operations and have faced long-standing accusations of targeting unarmed Palestinians, including children, in both Gaza and the West Bank.
