Saudi Arabia outlines urban development plan for 2025
Saudi Arabia aims to boost urban policy and services coordination by 2025, enhancing residents' quality of life, according to a top official.
At the inaugural Global Smart City Forum in Riyadh, the Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, Majid Al-Hogail, shared plans for a national model called the Digital Twin to support the country's Vision 2030 initiative, promoting citizen engagement and urban progress.
Al-Hogail highlighted the Kingdom's aspirations, including positioning at least 10 Saudi cities within the top 50 globally by focusing on governance, sustainability, and population engagement.
He noted that four cities had already entered the Smart Cities Index due to technological advancements in municipal frameworks.
In Jeddah, an IoT-based waste management system has decreased infractions by 25% and provided over 20,000 managed parking spaces to ease congestion.
Al-Hogail also mentioned significant traffic flow improvements in Riyadh, with a 36% reduction in congestion compared to the previous year, as stated by Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, President of the Saudi Data and AI Authority.
The conference highlighted Saudi Arabia's utilization of smart city platforms to drive future sustainable smart cities, improve governance, and foster investment in smart solutions.
Al-Ghamdi also credited AI and advanced analytics for improving traffic and crowd management during the recent Hajj season, significantly reducing waiting times in Makkah.
