Global Pistachio Shortage Amid Rising Demand for 'Dubai Chocolate'
Soaring demand for a popular chocolate treat from the UAE has led to a global pistachio shortage and rising prices, with significant impacts on the US and Iran
The recent surge in popularity of a chocolate snack from the United Arab Emirates, which has become a TikTok trend over the past year, has resulted in a global shortage of pistachios and subsequent price increases.
According to reports, the high demand for this treat has led to supply chain issues and significant price hikes.
In 2024, prior to the snack's rise to fame, the price of 450 grams of pistachios (approximately one pound) was $7.65, but has since increased to $10.30 for the same quantity.
As a result of the high demand and fears of shortages, 'Dubai Chocolate' packages are being resold at inflated prices worldwide.
One notable consequence of this trend is that Iran, the world's second-largest pistachio producer, has increased its exports to the UAE by 40% over the past six months, compared to the preceding 12-month period.
Additionally, farmers in California who previously focused on almond cultivation have begun growing pistachios, although these new crops will not yield a harvest until September of next year.
