A SpaceX Rocket Is About to Crash Into the Moon — and Scientists Hope to Watch

A discarded Falcon 9 stage is expected to hit the lunar surface on Wednesday at more than 5,400 miles per hour, creating a fresh crater and a plume of dust that may be visible through telescopes.
A SpaceX rocket is expected to crash into the Moon on Wednesday in a rare, unplanned collision that scientists hope to observe in real time from Earth and lunar orbit.

The object is not a crewed spacecraft, a working satellite or a threat to Earth.

It is the discarded upper stage of a Falcon 9 launch, left drifting after it sent two commercial landers toward the Moon in January 2025.

The roughly four-tonne rocket stage is projected to strike at about 06:34 Coordinated Universal Time on August 5, travelling at approximately 2.43 kilometres per second, or more than 5,400 miles per hour.

The collision will release kinetic energy comparable to almost three tonnes of TNT, pulverising the rocket and blasting lunar rock and dust away from the impact point.

The expected target lies near the Bell and Einstein craters, close to the Moon’s northwestern edge.

That geography matters.

Earlier calculations placed the impact on terrain barely visible from Earth, but newer trajectory models place the average point just beyond the lunar limb, on the far side.

The exact location may still shift as astronomers refine the orbit, and it will determine whether Earth-based telescopes can see the first flash or only the dust rising above the horizon.

Either way, the Moon will not look as though it has exploded.

There will be no sound, no fireball in an atmosphere and no shock wave sweeping across the surface.

The Moon has no atmosphere to slow the rocket before impact, so the stage will strike intact at high speed.

The initial flash is expected to last less than a second.

The more promising target for telescopes is the debris plume that may remain visible for minutes.

The crash should leave a new crater between roughly 20 and 40 metres wide and about five metres deep.

Scientists cannot yet predict its precise shape because the Falcon stage is long, hollow and tumbling.

If it hits sideways or breaks apart just before contact, it could leave an irregular or double crater rather than the clean circular bowl created by a compact asteroid.

The amount of dust thrown up is also uncertain.

Some simulations suggest that more than one million kilograms of lunar material could be excavated, most of it falling back within seconds.

Other models predict a broad ejecta curtain rising 15 to 20 kilometres and a narrower central spike that could climb as high as 75 to 100 kilometres.

Fine particles may remain in flight for several minutes and travel hundreds of kilometres across the Moon, but the debris is not expected to escape lunar gravity or pose any danger to Earth.

This is not a SpaceX mission deliberately aimed at the Moon.

Falcon 9’s first stage is designed to return for reuse, but its upper stage is generally expendable.

After releasing Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander and ispace’s Resilience lander, the stage remained in a high, Moon-crossing orbit.

Blue Ghost landed successfully in March 2025. Resilience crashed during its landing attempt in June 2025. The abandoned rocket body continued circling Earth until the Moon’s gravity turned its path into a collision course.

The impact has become an unusually valuable scientific opportunity because researchers know far more about this incoming object than they do about a natural meteor.

Its approximate mass, dimensions, speed and arrival time are known.

By comparing those facts with the resulting crater and dust plume, scientists can test how accurately their models describe impacts on loose lunar soil and exposed bedrock.

Observatories in North and South America are best positioned to attempt a detection because the Moon will be above the horizon in darkness.

The flash will not be visible to the naked eye, and even large telescopes may miss it.

Professional observatories will use high-speed cameras and spectroscopy to search for the flash and identify material in the plume.

Amateur astronomers with telescope-mounted cameras are also being asked to record the event.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has already photographed the anticipated impact zone and will image it again after the collision.

South Korea’s Danuri lunar orbiter is expected to make a close pass by the rocket stage shortly before impact and will also conduct follow-up observations.

Those images should reveal the crater, its ejecta blanket and any fresh material exposed beneath the lunar surface.

The event also highlights a growing problem beyond Earth orbit.

Space agencies and private companies are preparing dozens of lunar missions, but the space between Earth and the Moon remains harder to track than the crowded satellite environment around Earth.

The collision is harmless today because it is occurring far from any crew, lander or lunar base.

Its lasting importance may be as a warning: the next generation of Moon missions will need reliable disposal plans before abandoned hardware becomes a hazard rather than a scientific spectacle.

The first answer will come shortly after Wednesday’s impact, when telescopes and lunar orbiters begin comparing their recordings with the predicted crash site.
