Saudi Special Olympics Team Shines at the Gulf Athletics Competition
The Saudi Special Olympics team continues to sparkle in the Gulf Athletics Competition for the Middle East and North Africa, held today, February 24, 2024, by bagging an impressive array of medals across various events.
Today, the team secured 8 gold medals, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. Athletes Abdulrahman Al-Jahani and Mujtaba Al-Khamis clinched gold medals in the 400m race, while Rahaf Al-Balawi triumphed with a gold in the women's 400m and another in the 50m sprint. Sara Al-Shawamin replicated this success with a gold in the 50m sprint, also clinching gold in the shot put event.
The men's and women's relay teams both took home gold medals. Athlete Muayyad Al-Darwish earned a silver in the 400m race, with Sara Al-Arfaj and Mujtaba Al-Khamis winning silver in the shot put. Mohammad Al-Hajji snagged a bronze in the 400m race, and a bronze in shot put was added to Al-Darwish's accolades.
The competitions concluded today before the closing ceremony of the event. Mr. Talal Al-Humaidan, the Public Relations and Media Director of the Saudi Special Olympics, pointed out that the champions in athletics achieved outstanding results and demonstrated high skills. Al-Humaidan congratulated all the athletes on their achievements and reaffirmed the support of the Saudi Special Olympics Federation for intellectually and developmentally disabled athletes.
Highlighting the significant interest in sports within the Kingdom, he emphasized that the Federation is dedicated to providing all the necessary resources to achieve the best results. Al-Humaidan also extended thanks to the coaches of the Saudi teams for their relentless efforts leading up to these honorable outcomes. The coaches have been striving for peak performance through the preparatory camps that preceded the participation in the Gulf competition.
