Saudi Arabia Commits 1.9 Billion Riyals to Yemen Development to Bolster Stability and Services
Riyadh unveils substantial new financing package aimed at infrastructure, basic services and long-term economic support in war-torn Yemen
Saudi Arabia has unveiled a fresh development funding package worth 1.9 billion Saudi riyals aimed at supporting Yemen’s post-conflict recovery, reinforcing basic services and fostering long-term stability in the beleaguered country.
The announcement, made by Saudi officials on Wednesday, follows the withdrawal of United Arab Emirates forces and allied Southern Transitional Council fighters from parts of southern Yemen, and underscores Riyadh’s effort to rebuild governance capacity and public infrastructure after years of civil war.
The investment is to be channelled into projects that strengthen essential services such as healthcare, education, roads and electricity supply across multiple provinces, reflecting a concerted push to improve living conditions for Yemeni citizens and underpin the internationally recognised government’s institutional presence across liberated areas.
The package also includes strategic symbolic gestures such as constructing a mosque on Socotra Island, underscoring Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting social and cultural cohesion.
The development funding comes amid heightened geopolitical competition for influence in Yemen following the recent Saudi-backed offensive that saw government forces retake key territory from the UAE-aligned separatists.
Riyadh’s support plan is designed to deliver stability on multiple fronts, with proposed initiatives addressing infrastructure, public services and energy provision — including fuel supplies to boost electricity production across ten provinces.
Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman reaffirmed Riyadh’s backing for Yemen’s internationally recognised government, framing the assistance as part of broader efforts to enhance security, promote development and lay foundations for a sustainable future.
The funding initiative dovetails with other Saudi contributions to Yemen’s budget and reconstruction, reflecting a multi-faceted approach to economic and institutional recovery after years of devastating conflict and humanitarian strain.
Saudi diplomatic language emphasised that these measures are fundamental to creating conditions conducive to peace, stability and prosperity for the Yemeni people, while also reinforcing Riyadh’s strategic interest in regional security and reconstruction.
