CAIRO - The Egyptian Interior Ministry has announced the arrest of five individuals in separate incidents for their involvement in animal cruelty.
The arrests come after photos and videos surfaced on social media showing the suspects mistreating animals.
In the first incident, two people were arrested in Alexandria after a photo appeared on
Facebook showing one of them holding a dog over a balcony.
The suspects confessed to the crime and will face legal action.
In the second incident, three individuals were arrested after a video clip was posted on social media showing them torturing a cat.
The police arrested the torturer, cameraman, and the publisher of the clip.
The three suspects are residents of Giza Governorate and their mobile phones were found to contain video footage of the torture.
They also confessed to the crime and will be referred to legal authorities for further action.
In a separate incident in March, a cafe worker in Cairo was investigated by the public prosecution after a video clip surfaced showing him torturing cats.
The worker was later arrested and faced legal action.
An investigation revealed that he had committed the torture as a joke with friends, with the intention of uploading the clip on TikTok to attract views.
The video was found on his mobile phone.
The public prosecution ordered the release of the accused on a bail of 500 Egyptian pounds ($16).
Egyptian authorities are taking a strong stance against animal cruelty and are working to crack down on such incidents.
Animal welfare organizations have welcomed the arrests and urged the authorities to continue their efforts to protect animals from mistreatment.
