U.S. Defense Chief Emphasizes Need for Israel to Protect Civilians for Success in Gaza
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has called on Israel to prioritize civilian protection while confronting Hamas in Gaza. He emphasized that safeguarding non-combatants is critical for success in urban warfare. Austin drew parallels with his experience in Iraq and the coalition's efforts against Daesh, highlighting the importance of minimizing civilian casualties.
The recent resurgence of conflict followed a failed week-long ceasefire, with Israel and Hamas trading blame for the ceasefire’s failure. At the Reagan National Defense Forum, Austin underscored that winning the support of the civilian population is essential, warning against turning tactical gains into strategic losses if civilians side with the enemy.
The conflict reignited after Hamas launched a surprise attack from Gaza on October 7, which Israel claims resulted in around 1,200 fatalities. Israel's subsequent military response in Gaza has reportedly led to over 15,000 deaths, fueling anger in the Middle East and sparking retaliatory attacks against US and Israeli targets.
Drones and missiles from Lebanon and Yemen have targeted Israel, while US forces in Iraq and Syria have faced several attacks injuring US personnel. The US has attributed these attacks to Iran-backed forces and has retaliated with air strikes while vowing to protect American troops and respond to any aggression against them.
