Tokyo Governor Anticipates 'Exciting' World Expo in Riyadh
Tokyo's Governor Yuriko Koike expressed enthusiasm for the 'exciting' World Expo 2030, recently awarded to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In her interview with Arab News Japan, she extended congratulations to the Kingdom and anticipated an event that would astonish the global community.
Following Osaka's hosting in 2025, Japan will hand over Expo responsibilities to Saudi Arabia. At the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, Koike stressed her desire for the Riyadh Expo to be sustainable and highlighted the importance of Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf region working together on decarbonization and environmental initiatives.
Koike, the first female governor of Tokyo, underlined her city's ambitious climate goals: reducing CO2 emissions by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2050. To address the fact that residential properties are responsible for 70% of Tokyo's emissions, she revealed a 2025 policy mandating solar or renewable energy installations in all new buildings.
Tokyo will also be at the forefront of technological and environmental innovation as it prepares for the SusHi Tech summit next year, aiming to transform into a smart city and boost the digital economy while supporting startups focused on sustainability.
Regarding the Gaza Strip, Koike shared her concern for its people and mentioned a Japanese company's efforts to provide sanitary products to women and children there. She recalled Japan's previous contribution of building a school for deaf children and expressed hopes for a swift resolution to the ongoing crisis.
