Saudi Crown Prince and Syrian President Discuss Stabilisation, Reconstruction and Regional Ties in Riyadh Talks
Mohammed bin Salman hosts Bashar al-Assad in landmark engagement focused on de-escalation, economic cooperation and future diplomatic normalization
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held high-level talks in Riyadh on Saturday amid broader efforts to address security challenges and promote stability in the Middle East.
The meeting, the first of its kind in years between the two leaders, underscored Saudi Arabia’s proactive diplomatic role in addressing the Syrian conflict’s enduring humanitarian and geopolitical consequences and explored pathways toward de-escalation, reconstruction and economic cooperation.
During the discussions, the Saudi leadership emphasised the importance of advancing stability in Syria and supporting inclusive political solutions that reflect the interests of the Syrian people.
Prince Mohammed highlighted Riyadh’s commitment to regional peace and the Kingdom’s vision of fostering economic partnerships that could catalyse reconstruction efforts in war-torn areas.
Assad conveyed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s engagement, noting shared interests in combating terrorism, enhancing security and reviving economic activity.
The talks also covered mechanisms to facilitate humanitarian assistance, the return of displaced Syrians and potential Saudi investment in reconstruction projects, signalling a shift toward more substantive diplomatic and economic engagement.
While the meeting did not announce formal agreements, both sides characterised the dialogue as constructive and aligned with emerging efforts by several Arab states to re-establish ties with Damascus after years of conflict.
Saudi Arabia’s outreach reflects its broader strategy to strengthen regional cooperation and address lingering conflicts through diplomatic channels and economic development initiatives.
Observers noted that this engagement could signal a recalibration of regional alignments, with Riyadh playing a central role in shaping post-conflict recovery and encouraging integration of Syria into wider Middle Eastern economic frameworks.
The dialogue comes amid parallel regional moves toward normalising relations with Damascus, with an emphasis on stability, reconstruction and counter-terrorism cooperation as shared priorities.
