Saudi Communications Commission Joins the Green Digital Action Initiative for Sustainable Tech Practices
The Saudi Communications, Space and Technology Commission is set to become part of the International Telecommunication Union's Green Digital Action initiative. This collaboration was revealed during COP28, with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin in attendance. The initiative's goal is to drive industry commitment towards climate action, utilizing digital technology to foster environmentally sustainable solutions.
Several international organizations back this effort. The commission will spearhead efforts on sustainable practices within the ICT industry to reduce emissions, promote open access to environmental data, uphold green standards, and integrate digital tech into various sectors to aid in environmental preservation and disaster management.
By joining, the commission commits to enhancing digital strategies for climate mitigation, implementing policies that support a circular economy, and decreasing carbon emissions. Furthermore, it will work alongside global public and private entities to transition to an environmentally-friendly digital framework.
Additionally, a panel discussion, "Circular Economy," is arranged for COP28 to outline Saudi Arabia's digital sustainability leadership, featuring ITU Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas and various country representatives. The discussion aims to address electronic waste handling regulations that Saudi Arabia, in alliance with the ITU, has proposed. This initiative targets implementation in Zambia, Rwanda, and Paraguay, seeking to address e-waste treatment challenges and elevate awareness among decision-makers and industry influencers.
Saudi Arabia is proactively launching awareness campaigns and educational programs to encourage the responsible use of technology, driving a sustainable future globally.
