Saudi Arabia's Cultural Renaissance Embraces the Sounds of Metal Music
Saudi Arabia’s metal scene is flourishing, evidenced by the enthusiastic reception of local metal band Immortal Pain at Jeddah's Comic Con Arabia. The band's concert on Friday drew a substantial crowd, marking their second appearance at the convention since their formation in 2005 with only two members.
In an Arab News interview, the band discussed their origins and creative process. Inspiration for their music springs from daily experiences, and drummer Al-Shammari once even crafted a tune from construction noises. Frontman Ashoor, with a flair for poetry, pens the lyrics, primarily in English, though the band is keen to explore Arabic compositions.
Initially, metal was a niche genre in Saudi Arabia, but Immortal Pain's fan base has grown significantly, reaching about a thousand supporters at recent Comic Con events. They've performed mini-concerts across the kingdom, produced original tracks, and plan to release an album next year with an accompanying MENA region tour, including concerts in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt.
Local metal music's popularity is surging, contesting rock star Gene Simmons' critiques. Saudi fans are even anticipating Metallica's upcoming concert. Furthermore, Immortal Pain has hinted at prospective international gigs, including an invitation to perform in Germany.
