The President of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric, landed in the battered Gaza Strip on Monday, urging for the safeguarding of its civilian population amidst what she described as extreme suffering.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced that President Spoljaric’s Middle East trip would include several stops, with a planned visit to Israel in the upcoming weeks.
Upon arrival in Gaza, Spoljaric highlighted the dire situation on social media, noting the lack of safety for civilians and the difficulty in providing adequate humanitarian aid due to a military blockade.
Spoljaric, addressing criticisms of the ICRC's response to Israeli captives held by Hamas and Palestinian detainees in Israel, called for humane treatment of all captives and their release, emphasizing the need for the ICRC's unhindered access to them.
Her visit follows the resumption of intense conflict after a temporary truce, orchestrated by Qatar, the US, and Egypt, collapsed. This truce saw an exchange of numerous hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas.
