Japan's Green Ambitions Centered on Crucial Cooperation with Saudi Arabia
Japan is prioritizing partnerships with nations like Saudi Arabia to reach its 2050 carbon neutrality target. The country's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Kobayashi-Terada Maki, shared this perspective, stressing Japan's energy reliance on others and the need for energy-efficient measures. As the COP28 opens in Dubai, she announced forthcoming cooperation agreements with Japanese firms to support climate goals.
Japan is on course to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 46% from 2013 levels by 2030, aligning with its 2050 net zero ambitions. Proud of its progress, Japan has implemented a green transformation strategy, aiming to raise 150 trillion yen in joint public-private funding.
To further encourage emission reductions, Japan will introduce a carbon pricing system to finance improvements in energy efficiency for heavy emitters. This will extend to emission-based charges for fossil fuel importers by 2028 and a pricing system by 2033, progressively increasing to incentivize cutbacks.
In the effort to drive collective Asian emission reduction, Japan's Economy Ministry plans to host the Asia Zero Emission Community. Japan also intends to bolster financial support toward global institutions. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio announced a $10 million contribution at COP28, marking Japan's commitment to being a leading contributor to international green initiatives.
