Hezbollah Signals Detente with Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Tensions
Militant group urges Riyadh to ‘open a new page’ even as Gulf kingdom remains cautious over weapons and disarmament demands
In a significant shift in regional rhetoric, Hezbollah’s leadership has called on Saudi Arabia to abandon years of enmity and open a new chapter — a move that could reshape fragile Gulf-Levant relations.
In a televised address on 19 September 2025, Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem urged Riyadh to set aside past hostilities and establish a united front against Israel.
He said Hezbollah’s arms were directed solely at Israel and not at Arab or Gulf states, and proposed that both sides freeze historical grievances to confront what he described as the region’s common external threat.
The appeal comes as part of wider regional realignments.
Back-channel diplomacy reportedly brokered by Iran facilitated Hezbollah’s outreach to Saudi Arabia, signalling Tehran’s concern over the group’s losses during last year’s war with Israel.
The group’s call for détente echoed broader geopolitical shifts — including growing pressure on Lebanon to disarm militias and shifting Gulf priorities amid new security realities.
Yet despite the unexpected overture, Saudi Arabia has not responded.
Riyadh continues to view Hezbollah as a destabilizing force, given its long-standing designation of the group as terrorist and repeated insistence that Lebanon must disarm Hezbollah for genuine stability.
Analysts say any thaw will be measured and contingent on clear steps toward disarmament and Lebanon’s full sovereignty.
Hezbollah’s attempt to recalibrate relations appears driven by pragmatism: weakened after military setbacks and facing mounting regional and international pressure, the group may see rapprochement with Gulf powers as strategic insurance.
For Saudi Arabia, cautious engagement could offer leverage over Lebanese politics — but only if Hezbollah acknowledges Riyadh’s core demands.
As regional dynamics continue to evolve, the coming weeks will test whether Hezbollah’s overture is treated as a sincere bid for reconciliation — or a tactical move amid mounting pressure.
The silence from Saudi officials suggests that, for now, Riyadh remains unconvinced that old tensions have truly turned a new page.
