Cristiano Ronaldo at Risk of Further Sanctions After Disciplinary Incident in Saudi Pro League
Al Nassr captain could face multiple-match ban and fines following gestures interpreted as offensive toward officials in heated top-flight contest
Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, is facing potential additional sanctions from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) after a highly visible disciplinary incident during a recent match against Al Hilal that has drawn scrutiny from officials and commentators alike.
The veteran Portuguese forward, already well known in the Kingdom for his prolific scoring, made gestures during and after the contest that have led Saudi authorities to consider charges under conduct rules involving perceived insults toward match officials and a breach of sportsmanship standards.
The incident occurred during a tightly contested fixture in which Al Nassr suffered a 3-1 defeat to title rivals Al Hilal, with Ronaldo scoring his side’s lone goal before being substituted.
Frustration visibly mounted on the pitch, and footage from the match shows the 41-year-old appearing to signal displeasure toward the referee and reacting with emotive body language that authorities say may fall under “offensive conduct” provisions of the federation’s disciplinary code.
Saudi officials are assessing the gesture against articles addressing insults to match officials and behaviour deemed detrimental to the integrity of the competition.
If the federation’s disciplinary committee concludes that Ronaldo’s conduct violated its regulations, precedent suggests he could be subject to a suspension of up to four matches and a financial penalty ranging from twenty thousand to forty thousand Saudi riyals, the equivalent of roughly five thousand to ten thousand U.S. dollars.
Such a sanction would come on top of previous disciplinary measures Ronaldo has received in Saudi Arabia, including a one-match suspension and fine earlier in his Al Nassr tenure for making an obscene gesture toward rival supporters after chants of “Messi,” his long-standing rival’s name, echoed in the stadium.
Ronaldo’s disciplinary history in the Kingdom includes multiple prior incidents assessed under SAFF’s ethics and conduct regulations.
In February 2024, he was sanctioned for an obscene gesture directed at Al Shabab supporters, resulting in a one-match suspension and a fine, and he has faced criticism for other expressive reactions captured on social media during matches.
While not unprecedented, these episodes have placed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner under increased scrutiny from local regulators keen to uphold standards of professionalism and respect in a league seeking global recognition.
Despite these developments, Ronaldo’s on-field performance remains formidable; he continues to lead league scoring charts and contribute significantly to Al Nassr’s campaign.
As the federation’s disciplinary process unfolds, the possibility of an extended ban or further fines looms, potentially impacting Al Nassr’s push in both domestic and regional competitions and highlighting the broader interplay between star power and regulatory expectations within Saudi football.
