Savoring Saudi's Culinary Heritage: Najran Showcases Jareesh and Maqshush at Culinary Arts Caravan
A mobile culinary exhibition is taking place in Najran, Saudi Arabia, showcasing the country's rich heritage of dishes and desserts.
Hosted by the Culinary Arts Commission, the event at King Fahd National Park in the Saqam forest features live cooking demonstrations and samples of two iconic Saudi dishes: jareesh and maqshush.
Jareesh is a savory cracked wheat dish cooked with vegetables and tomato sauce, sometimes with lamb.
Maqshush is a sweet buckwheat dessert topped with ghee, honey, dates, molasses, or sugar.
The exhibition runs until April 20 and offers visitors an immersive experience into Saudi cuisine.
The text is about Jareesh, a savory dish made of cracked wheat, vegetables, and tomato sauce, being designated as a national culinary treasure in Saudi Arabia.
This designation is part of the National and Regional Dishes Narratives initiative by the commission, which aims to catalog and celebrate local culinary gems.
The initiative started a seven-month-long caravan journey across various provinces of Saudi Arabia, including Najran, with upcoming stops in Jazan, Asir, and Baha.
The goal is to increase appreciation for local heritage, strengthen connections with Saudi culinary traditions, and provide visitors with a memorable culinary experience.
Jareesh, along with maqshush, is being highlighted as significant parts of Saudi Arabia's dining culture.
The National and Regional Dishes Narratives initiative has designated official dishes for various regions in Saudi Arabia.
Some of these dishes include Marqooq for Riyadh, saleeg for Makkah, Madini rice for Madinah, bakila for Jouf, and malehiy for the Northern Borders.
Other dishes represent different regions such as Al-Maqnah bread for the Baha region, kubaybat for Hail, raqsh for Najran, Al-Hasawi rice for the Eastern Province, Al-Mughash for Jazan, Al-Sayadiyah rice for Tabuk, and Al-Hanith for Asir.
The event, which runs until April 20, highlights two iconic delicacies, jareesh and maqshush, showcasing them in innovative and enticing ways.
