UN Chief: Israeli Trucks Delaying Aid to Gaza due to Body and Detainee Transfers
The UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, stated on Tuesday that trucks transporting bodies and detainees from Israel to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing regularly delay aid deliveries.
The deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza has increased pressure on Israel to increase supplies to prevent disease and hunger among the 1.7 million displaced people.
Lazzarini mentioned that aid deliveries had improved in April but were still facing issues such as regular crossing closures due to the transportation of bodies and detainees.
UNRWA spokesperson Juliette Touma provided more details, explaining that since December, Israel had sent 225 bodies to Gaza in three containers, which were then transported by UNRWA to local health authorities for burial, resulting in temporary crossing closures.
UNRWA spokesperson denied having details about the circumstances of deaths in Gaza and refused to investigate.
She confirmed that detainees have been transferred from Israel to Gaza "dozens of times," but Israel's COGAT did not respond to a request for comment.
The Israeli diplomatic mission in Geneva accused UNRWA of deflecting from their own failures and responsibilities regarding aid deliveries.
Tensions remain high between Israel and UNRWA, with Israel accusing 19 UNRWA staff of involvement in October attacks that killed over 1,200 people.
UN investigators are examining allegations against Israel regarding UNRWA staff being members of terrorist groups, but Israel has not provided sufficient evidence.
Kerem Shalom is one of the two open crossings between Gaza and its neighbors Egypt and Israel.
Palestinian authorities have stated that Israel has returned bodies from the Israeli-Hamas conflict for identification and determination of place of death, not as hostages.
