Makkah Route Streamlines Hajj Journey for Turkiye Pilgrims
A Saudi-led initiative employs advanced technology and on-ground services to simplify travel procedures for pilgrims from Turkiye.
Istanbul: A Saudi-led initiative is transforming the Hajj travel experience for pilgrims departing from Turkey, using advanced technology and coordinated on-ground services to fast-track procedures from airport departure to accommodation in the Kingdom.
A key feature of the Makkah Route Initiative is a smart baggage coding system that links each pilgrim’s luggage to their personal data and accommodation in Saudi Arabia, allowing bags to be taken directly to residences in Makkah and Madinah without the need for collection on arrival, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The process begins at a dedicated hall at Istanbul Airport, where baggage is electronically tagged and sorted through a fully integrated system before being dispatched to buses and delivered in sync with pilgrims’ arrival.
Qualified Saudi personnel — including specialists in passports, logistics, and IT — are stationed at the airport to complete entry procedures before departure, eliminating bottlenecks upon arrival in the Kingdom.
Pilgrims said the service significantly reduced waiting times and physical strain, enabling them to proceed directly to their accommodations and focus on their rituals.
The baggage solution is operated by a special Saudi team from Saudi Post and forms part of a broader digital system aimed at improving operational efficiency and elevating the pilgrim experience.
Officials involved in the initiative described serving pilgrims as an honor and a responsibility, emphasizing that coordination among participating entities is key to ensuring a safe and smooth journey.
Pilgrims benefiting from the program praised the speed of processing and ease of movement, saying the streamlined procedures reduced travel burdens and enhanced overall comfort.
The Makkah Route Initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to modernize Hajj services through digital innovation and integrated operations.
