German Chancellor Friedrich Merz maintains his commitment to cooperation with US President Donald Trump despite recent disagreements.
Berlin, Germany - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Sunday that he will not abandon efforts to collaborate with US President
Donald Trump, even in the face of escalating tensions over international conflicts.
Speaking to public broadcaster ARD in an interview scheduled for broadcast on Sunday night, Merz emphasized his dedication to nurturing the transatlantic relationship and working alongside Trump.
Merz sought to downplay any perceived rifts between Germany and the United States, arguing that the decision by Washington to withdraw 5,000 troops from military bases in Germany should not be viewed as retaliatory.
He noted that while the announcement may have been somewhat exaggerated, it was not a new development.
The recent back-and-forth criticism of US-Israeli actions against Iran has strained relations between European leaders and Trump.
Merz’s comment on April 27 that Iran was 'humiliating' the United States at the negotiating table prompted a strong response from Washington, including criticism aimed at Merz's leadership as chancellor.
While acknowledging tensions with Trump, Merz insisted that the US remains an important partner for Germany, particularly within NATO.
He also clarified that plans to deploy US Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany—originally announced by former President
Joe Biden—had been put on hold due to depleted arsenals resulting from conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.
Merz expressed confidence that European NATO countries could continue to deter Russia without relying specifically on those missiles or the presence of additional US forces.
He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon, while acknowledging differing views on how to achieve this goal.
Despite tensions with European leaders, Trump has not limited his criticism to Merz.
In recent statements, he has also expressed disappointment in the support and cooperation offered by Italy and Spain.
