Israeli Military Chief Issues Stark Warning Against Looting Amid Allegations of Misconduct
The IDF's top general condemns the practice, promising to investigate claims of looting and abuse in south Lebanon.
JERUSALEM: In a strongly worded address, Israel's Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has warned Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) personnel against engaging in acts of looting during their deployment in south Lebanon.
His statement came in response to recent allegations and footage suggesting that troops have been involved in such activities, including the misuse of social media to share questionable content.
Zamir stated, "The phenomenon of looting, if it exists within our ranks, is a disgrace that could stain the reputation of the entire IDF.
We will conduct thorough investigations into any allegations of misconduct".
The military's top general emphasized the gravity of the situation, declaring that sharing controversial messages on social media constitutes a red line for IDF soldiers.
He warned that disciplinary actions would be taken against those who violate this rule.
The Israeli military has previously stated that two soldiers faced 30 days of military detention and were removed from combat duty following an incident involving damage to civilian property in south Lebanon.
This incident had previously been reported by the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper, which cited testimonies from troops and field commanders alleging looting of civilian properties.
The IDF has publicly condemned any harm to civilian property or acts of looting with extreme severity, promising strict disciplinary and criminal measures against those found guilty.
The military has also conducted inspections at northern border crossings upon the departure of troops from operational activities, though it did not report any findings related to the allegations.
Local rights group Breaking the Silence reported that such behaviors have become increasingly common since Israel's 2023 ground invasion during the Gaza conflict.
Despite these developments, the IDF remains committed to maintaining high standards of conduct among its forces.
