Top Jalisco Cartel Leader 'El Jardinero' Arrested in Mexico, Minister Says
Mexican special forces apprehend Audias Flores, a top commander of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, in Nayarit.
Mexican security forces have arrested Audias Flores, known as "El Jardinero," one of the leading figures within the prominent Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in the western Mexican state of Nayarit.
This significant development was announced by Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch on Monday.
Flores held a substantial influence over extensive territories controlled by the CJNG along Mexico's Pacific coast, making him a critical element within the cartel's hierarchy.
His arrest has considerable implications, particularly as he was seen as a potential successor to Nemesio Oseguera, alias "El Mencho," who led the cartel until his death in a security operation earlier this year.
Experts like Carlos Olivo, a former US Drug Enforcement Administration official with extensive knowledge of the CJNG, believe that Flores's arrest will have an even greater impact on the cartel's operations compared to the removal of El Mencho.
Garcia Harfuch stated on social media platform X that legal proceedings in both Mexico and the United States led to this apprehension.
The US government had previously offered a $5 million reward for his capture due to charges filed against him in the United States, including accusations of drug trafficking.
The arrest is part of ongoing efforts by Mexican authorities to dismantle the country's powerful drug cartels following El Mencho's death, which security minister Garcia Harfuch has personally linked to a 2020 assassination attempt on his life.
Other prominent figures within the cartel are being eyed as potential successors, indicating that the internal dynamics of the CJNG remain in flux.
This arrest comes under increased scrutiny of Mexico’s national security situation as it prepares co-host the FIFA World Cup alongside the US and Canada this summer.
