Iran Denies Involvement in Explosion Affecting South Korean Ship in Hormuz
Tehran firmly rejects allegations of armed forces involvement in the incident affecting a Korean vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
May 07, 2026 - Iran has denied any involvement of its armed forces in an explosion that affected a South Korean vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident occurred this week, sparking international interest and concern.
Tehran's embassy in Seoul issued a statement categorically denying these allegations, emphasizing that Iran had no role in damaging the Korean ship in the strategic waterway.
The Panama-flagged cargo ship, operated by South Korean shipper HMM, was empty and at anchor when an explosion and fire broke out.
The Korea Times reported that there were no casualties, with the foreign ministry stating that the fire has been extinguished.
The vessel, named HMM Namu, is expected to be towed to a nearby port for damage assessment and repairs.
The 35,000-tonne general cargo ship had its engine room engulfed in flames but was able to contain the fire as shown on surveillance camera footage provided by HMM.
Despite this incident, the 24 crew members remained onboard the vessel without any injuries reported.
The situation remains tense with global implications due to the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and its role as a major chokepoint for international shipping, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions involving Iran and other global powers.
