Incident at Oil Depot Causes Brief Fire, Army Warns of Possible Repeats
Several Russian drones entered Latvian airspace overnight, with two crashing and one causing a brief fire at an oil depot, the army reported on Thursday.
The incident occurred near Rezekne in eastern Latvia, where the crashed drone ignited a small fire at the facility.
Firefighters quickly controlled the blaze, ensuring no significant damage or injuries occurred.
According to the Latvian army, which is part of both the EU and NATO, this event highlights the potential for further such incidents as long as Russian aggression against Ukraine persists.
The army has cautioned that more entries into Latvian airspace by foreign unmanned aerial vehicles may occur given the ongoing conflict.
Similar incidents involving drones from Russia and Ukraine have been recorded in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
