South Sudan's President Kiir Dismisses Military Chief and Finance Minister in Latest Reshuffle
President Salva Kiir has dismissed the country's military chief and finance minister, state media reported.
JUBA: South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed the country’s military chief and a finance minister who had been in post for less than three months, state media reported late on Wednesday.
The dismissals are part of frequent changes in the top ranks of Kiir’s government in recent years, which analysts say signal an effort to consolidate power amid succession uncertainty.
General Paul Nang, the dismissed army chief, occupied his position since October and had faced increasing scrutiny due to worsening insecurity in the country.
Similarly, Salvatore Garang Mabiordit had served as finance minister since February 23.
Kiir has reappointed General Santino Deng Wol as the new army chief.
A close ally of the President and a native of South Sudan’s Bahr El Gazal region, Wol previously held the same position between 2020 and 2024.
Kuol Daniel Ayulo, a career technocrat with previous experience at the finance ministry and trade ministry, has been appointed as the new finance minister according to state media.
South Sudan continues to struggle in implementing key reforms outlined in the 2018 peace agreement, including the unification of armed forces and holding of elections.
