Iran Demands 'Credible Guarantees' Against Attacks for Gulf Stability: Envoy
Tehran's UN envoy says lasting stability in the Gulf can only be achieved with guarantees against aggression and respect for Iran's rights.
The United Nations, United States: Iran requires assurances of no further US-Israeli attacks to secure the oil-rich Gulf region, according to Tehran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani.
Addressing a Security Council session called by Bahrain, where numerous countries criticized Iran for controlling the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
"Lasting stability and security in the Arabian Gulf and the wider region can only be realized through the cessation of aggression against Iran," Iravani stated at the session.
He emphasized that credible guarantees must accompany this cessation to ensure respect for Iran's legitimate rights.
In a subsequent press conference, Iravani voiced frustration over the lack of condemnation for the United States' naval blockade.
He described US actions as those of pirates and terrorists, accusing them of targeting merchant vessels through force and intimidation, as well as unlawfully seizing ships and detaining their crews.
While several nations expressed concerns regarding international navigation at the meeting, none addressed or condemned the U.S. blockade, according to Iravani.
