Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Green Hydrogen Project Nears Completion, Setting Stage for Clean Energy Leadership

Construction of the world’s largest renewable-powered hydrogen facility is approaching final stages, with operational milestones targeted for 2026 and first outputs as early as 2027
Saudi Arabia’s flagship NEOM Green Hydrogen Project is advancing rapidly toward its scheduled operational launch in 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the Kingdom’s renewable energy strategy and economic diversification agenda.

The world’s largest utility-scale green hydrogen facility, developed through a joint venture between NEOM, ACWA Power and Air Products, has achieved approximately ninety percent construction completion across its core components — including the hydrogen production plant, associated wind and solar power farms, and transmission infrastructure — underscoring steady progress toward commissioning next year.

Construction milestones have encompassed the delivery and installation of major equipment such as wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolyser systems, cold boxes and extensive pipe infrastructure.

The project’s integrated renewable energy capacity will harness around four gigawatts of combined solar and wind power to drive electrolysis — the process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen — to produce clean hydrogen at scale.

Daily output is expected to reach up to six hundred tonnes of green hydrogen, which will be converted into green ammonia for transport and export once full commissioning and quality testing are complete.

Initial shipments of green ammonia are anticipated in early 2027, following commissioning of the electrolysers and associated systems.

Situated within Oxagon, the industrial zone of the broader NEOM initiative on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, the plant exemplifies the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 ambition to become a global leader in low-carbon energy solutions and diversify its economy beyond hydrocarbons.

By utilising abundant renewable resources and cutting-edge technologies, the project aims to mitigate carbon emissions significantly compared with conventional hydrogen production methods and position Saudi Arabia at the forefront of the emerging clean energy export market.

The NEOM facility will play a key role in global decarbonisation efforts by supplying green hydrogen and ammonia to industries and transport sectors seeking to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, reinforcing Riyadh’s strategic drive toward sustainable long-term economic growth.
