Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense Issues Flood Warnings Amidst Heavy Rain Forecast
Thunderstorms, heavy rain expected to persist through Tuesday; authorities advise caution and adherence to safety guidelines.
The Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defense is urging the public to exercise increased vigilance as forecasts indicate that thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and associated flood risks will affect significant portions of the Kingdom from Monday into Tuesday.
Citizens have been advised by authorities to remain in secure locations, especially those prone to flooding, such as valleys, and to avoid engaging with rainwater accumulations.
According to the National Center for Meteorology (NCM), moderate to heavy thunderstorms are anticipated across a broad swathe of Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Qassim, Hail, Eastern Province, Northern Borders, Al-Jouf, Al-Baha, Asir, and Jazan.
The NCM warns that these conditions are likely to generate flash floods alongside hail showers and strong downdrafts.
Active winds are also expected to stir dust and sand in some areas, extending to the Tabuk region which is forecast to see lighter rainfall but sustained wind activity.
Visibility may be reduced and driving conditions hazardous on exposed routes.
The Civil Defense authorities have pointed out that regions such as Makkah and Riyadh face a higher likelihood of experiencing intense rainfall events, with similar weather patterns affecting much of Saudi Arabia.
Light to moderate rain has already been reported in Jubail and the Jubail Industrial City, indicating the broader meteorological system at work.
The NCM attributes the current conditions to a period of seasonal transition marked by atmospheric instability, typical during spring on the Arabian Peninsula.
This season often witnesses shifting air masses and increased humidity leading to thunderstorms, particularly over western highlands and central regions.
The resulting systems can produce localized but intense rainfall, heightening the risk of flash flooding in low-lying or desert areas.
